Bulgarien kündigt Datum für die Einführung des Euro an: 1. Januar 2026
The Bulgarian government and Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) announced the plan to adopt the Euro currency in the country. The transition, taking effect on January 1, 2026, has received approval from ECOFIN.
Bulgaria has clarified its Euro adoption date, completing another critical phase of its European Union membership process. In an announcement by the Bulgarian government and the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), it was declared that the country will officially adopt the Euro as its currency starting January 1, 2026.
Preparation Process Successfully Completed
Bulgaria has been preparing for Euro adoption since joining the European Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERM II) on July 10, 2020. The country has maintained a fixed central rate regime with a parity of 1 Euro = 1.95583 Bulgarian Leva.
Critical approvals received: Bulgaria received a positive convergence report from the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB) in June 2026, concluding that the country is ready to adopt the Euro as of January 1, 2026.
Final Approval from ECOFIN
The positive decision by ECOFIN (Economic and Financial Affairs Council) in July 2026 officially confirmed the January 1, 2026 date. This decision is considered the final major step in Bulgaria’s process of joining the Eurozone.
The Bulgarian government has accelerated its work on fulfilling subsequent commitments following ERM II accession, meeting convergence criteria as noted by EC and ECB convergence reports, and completing practical preparations for replacing the Bulgarian lev with the Euro.
