Denmark: E-Invoicing to Become the Common Way of Invoicing

The Danish Business Authority (Erhvervsstyrelsen) has announced a new executive order introducing requirements for registered digital bookkeeping systems, which are currently used by around 350,000 Danish businesses. The aim is to make Denmark e-invoicing easier to adopt; the authority estimates nationwide savings of up to DKK 9 billion per year if all businesses switch.

Key points:

  • MitID validation: By 1 March 2027, providers of registered bookkeeping systems must ask their customers to validate their business with MitID.
  • Automatic enrolment (opt-out): Providers must then inform customers that they will be automatically enrolled in e-invoicing unless they actively opt out.
  • Not exclusive: Enrolled businesses can still agree on other invoice formats with their customers and suppliers.
  • Early enrolment: Businesses can already ask their system provider to enrol them before the automatic process.

The changes apply to providers of registered digital bookkeeping systems, with automatic enrolment planned for spring 2027.
